In the skies of the Ecuadorian Amazon fly some of the planet's most majestic predators: the birds of prey (raptors). Eagles, falcons, and owls dominate the air with a strength and elegance that amazes every visitor. Observing them in the wild, soaring over the jungle or stalking from high branches, is one of the most thrilling experiences you can have at an Amazonian lodge.

The Eyes of the Forest

Birds of prey possess extraordinary eyesight, capable of detecting the slightest movement among the vegetation. Their sharp talons and silent flight make them perfect hunters, essential for maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.

Among the most impressive species that can be observed in the Ecuadorian Amazon are:

  • Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) With a wingspan of more than two meters, it is considered the queen of the jungle. It feeds on monkeys, sloths, and medium-sized birds. Seeing it in its natural habitat is a privilege, as it is one of the continent's most powerful and scarce birds.
  • Collared Forest-Falcon (Micrastur ruficollis) Fast and stealthy, this falcon moves through the trees with great agility. Its characteristic reddish chest and sharp cry make it unmistakable to birdwatchers.
  • Spectacled Owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata) With a penetrating gaze and dark plumage, this owl is the quintessential nocturnal hunter. It preys on small mammals, reptiles, and insects as night falls. Its deep hoot resonates through the trees, adding mystery to night walks.
  • Mangrove Black-Hawk (Buteogallus aequinoctialis) Common in wetland areas and near rivers, this hawk feeds on crabs and small fish. It is a symbol of the connection between the Amazonian skies and the waters that flow through the jungle.

A Spectacle for Birdwatching Lovers

The Ecuadorian Amazon is a paradise for birdwatching (avitourism). Many travelers arrive with cameras and binoculars in search of these majestic birds. From observation towers, during canoe rides, or on guided hikes, it is possible to appreciate the flight of the raptors in their natural environment.

Conservation: Protecting the Guardians of the Sky

Birds of prey are indicators of ecosystem health. Their conservation depends on protecting the forests and reducing hunting and deforestation. Lodges that promote sustainable tourism play a key role by educating and raising awareness among visitors.

The raptors of the Amazon are more than predators: they are symbols of strength, balance, and freedom. Observing their flight is a reminder that the jungle beats not only on the land and in the water, but also in the skies.
